Register Today for HI-San Diego's "Midnight Madness" Bike Ride

Cyclists of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend HI-San Diego's 40th Annual Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride® on Saturday, August 3. This 17-mile ride features a costume contest, food trucks, face painting, local vendors, and a light-your-bike contest. Having grown from a few hundred local riders to over 1,000 participants in 2012, riders can win coveted prizes, including a new bike from San Diego Bike Shop and two tickets from Alaska Airlines.

Advance registration for the bicycle ride is $35 for adults and $20 for ages 12 and under, or register on site for $40. Proceeds will benefit youth-oriented education programs provided by the two area HI-USA hostels. This year features a new starting point at Liberty Station and a primarily flat route along San Diego's picturesque waterfront and historic areas. Check-in starts at 9:00 pm, and the ride begins at midnight.

For more information and to register visit sandiegomidnightmadness.org

You Can Help Build a Greener HI-USA

This is a big month for us when it comes to sustainability. We are in the running to receive grant money from the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) to maximize our greening efforts, in particular earning third party eco-certification for 10 of our hostels. Learn about the program here, and make it happen by voting for us!

Visiting the USA With The Big Blog Exchange

Sara Rodriguez is a traveler and author of the blog mindfultravelbysara.com. She was selected as one of the 16 winners in HI's Big Blog Exchange contest, who swapped countries and blogs to share their experiences. Here's what Sara had to say:

Being one of the winners of the Big Blog Exchange contest was incredible. When I was packing, I was nervous about traveling alone through the United States and staying in hostels. I haven't slept in one since my trip to Italy, and I didn't know what to expect. Writing on my blog every day, taking lots of pictures, sharing my experiences on social networks, being in touch with other bloggers and discovering amazing destinations. It was such a challenge and I was so excited...

Travel Trivia

HI-Niagara Red Lounge opened in July, offering hostellers easy access to Niagara Falls. The Niagara River that feeds the famous falls is a connecting channel between two of the Great Lakes, can you name them?

a. Lake Erie and Lake Michigan
b. Lake Erie and Lake Huron
c. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
d. Lake Erie and Lake Superior

Send your answers to hitravelbytes@hiusa.org. One name will be chosen from all correct entries to win a special prize.

Congratulations to Rachel D., who knew the correct answer to the trivia question in the last issue. Harpers Ferry is at the the border of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Rachel won a copy of Lonely Planet's Bali travel guide.
