What’s the best seat on a flight?

Plus: 10 hangover cures from around the world, California's top experiences, Why I won't give up on Sri Lanka and you shouldn't either & more -

Lonely Planet

“Which seat should I pick?” That’s one of the first questions anyone ever asks me when they find out I’m an aviation journalist. Airlines are increasingly finding ways to squeeze a bit of extra cash out of passengers for a bit of extra comfort, and seats with more legroom are part of that. On the plus side, that means you don’t have to be an extra-special Ultra Amethyst Elite frequent flyer to buy your way into the big (legroom) leagues!

10 hangover cures from around the world
When it comes to hangovers, science is firm, if a little dull, on what to do the morning after the night before. Regular imbibers know that the evidence-backed ways to counter the effects of excessive alcohol include downing lots of water combined with electrolyte supplements, buoyed by judicious use of painkillers. However, a review of hangover remedies from around the world indicates that there are much more interesting ways by which merrymakers can ease their pain. They may not be scientifically proven but who says science is always right?

Why I won't give up on Sri Lanka and you shouldn't either
“Welcome to Sri Lanka!” was one of the first greetings I heard in Colombo, the country's bustling big city. A local graced me with those lovely words from across the street. Not a storekeeper, nor a hawker. Just a person who wanted to pass on a warm hello.

All aboard: Greece’s scenic train journeys
When it comes to train travel, Greece rarely springs to mind. The country’s relatively limited rail network means it doesn’t appear on any ‘epic train journeys’ lists, and because of this a number of its amazing—if short—stretches of railway remain unknown to the wider train-loving community of travelers.

Alternative isles: nine intriguing lake islands
The ocean doesn't have the monopoly on islands. Some of the world's loveliest and most culturally significant islands are actually surrounded by freshwater. Formed by sedimentation, erosion or volcanic activity, these islands can be huge (Manitoulin Island in Canada's Lake Huron is over 1000 square miles) or teeny (Phantom Ship, a craggy rock column in Crater Lake that's a mere 500 feet across and resembles a ghostly schooner in the fog).

20 free things to do in Melbourne
Melbourne is consistently voted the world’s most liveable city and Melburnians are quick to tell visitors what makes this city great, from their favorite restaurants (‘400 Gradi makes the world’s best margherita pizza, you know!’) to the laneway bars and cafes (‘better than Sydney’). But what makes a city really liveable is the stuff you can enjoy without opening your wallet. Here is our guide to the best free stuff to do in the world’s most liveable city.

Why Japan’s Michinoku Coastal Trail is the best hike I’ve ever done
Most of us are aware of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami that decimated a large part of the north east coast of Japan, but few people will know what happened afterwards. And nor did I. Until one evening, sitting at home, I absent-mindedly started researching cities along the coastline: Natori, Miyako, Shiogama; all of which were annihilated due to the disaster. I discovered that rebuilding in the region was in progress, and that some parts had been completed, including the Michinoku Coastal Trail (MCT).

The Grand Canyon: how to get the most from a short trip
On a first trip to the Grand Canyon, it’s easy to make a classic rookie mistake: part of a longer road trip, travelers don’t give themselves much time and don’t do any advance research, so they end up with a version of the Griswold experience. There it is—big, beautiful but somewhat underwhelming. Back in the car.

The dos and don’ts of flying etiquette from a frequent traveler
These days flying is more akin to a local bus than a transatlantic voyage on the Queen Elizabeth 2, so comparing some notional golden age of travel when flying was only for the super rich is unfair. There are, however, still a few ways in which flying would be better if we could all just be a little more thoughtful, a little more mindful of flying etiquette, and realize how our own behaviour affects others when traveling.
