New: A handbook for remote work and life

The latest book from Lonely Planet for those who don't want to return to an office

Lonely Planet
Introducing Lonely Planet TV

As countries grapple with how to safely resume tourism, one thing we do know is that for those of us fortunate enough to be able to work from home, COVID-19 presents something of a tectonic shift. We're going to see a lot of employers embrace more flexibility around working remotely, and in some cases, cost-cutting measures mean there might not be desks to return to.

We conceived of this guidebook long before this new reality, and right now the goal of working when and from wherever we want feels a little out of reach. It is, however, a future some of us can start to think about and plan for.

Learn how to live and work on the road with the latest addition to Lonely Planet’s Handbook series, a practical guide inspiring and motivating people to achieve their goal of experiencing more, starting a whole new way of living and creating a flexible work/life balance.

Written by Lonely Planet’s very own nomadic experts, this book is packed with top tips, insights and real life tales on what it’s really like to be working on the road. Plus, it's available in print and ebook format for wherever you want to take it.

When can I travel again?

How different countries are preparing for the return of tourism

Lonely Planet

Countries are grappling with how to safely resume tourism as coronavirus numbers recede. Last week the European Union called for a safe reopening of borders between member states with similar rates of COVID-19 infections. And countries and regions around the world who have claimed success in managing the virus are taking concrete steps to reopen hotels and hospitality facilities, and establish safe travel zones.

The 10 best drive-in theaters in the US
Since 1933, long before social distancing became a household term, drive-in cinemas turned the automobile into a private theater box, allowing moviegoers to chat, slurp out the last few drops of soda or even check their phones without disturbing anyone else. Now, as Americans try to carve out a new way of life, the drive-in theater, which had been nearly wiped away have become popular once again.

Our warehouse has made the decision to move to an emergency Social Distance Operating (SDO) model. What this means is that we are focusing our efforts on shipping out orders for high demand titles and latest releases first. We do expect this to change in the coming weeks, but in the meantime you might find you receive two parcels. It will also take the reduced warehouse crew 2-3 days to get it out the door. From there, we'd ask you to be mindful of restrictions that might be impacting local carrier services as they manage the current situation as best they can.

"I hope this is au revoir and not goodbye" - Our last trip to Paris before lockdown
It was my fifth trip to Paris, and my son’s first. For that reason alone, I couldn’t bring myself to cancel the plans we’d been rehearsing for weeks – climbing the Eiffel Tower, daily breakfasts of pain au chocolat, a glimpse of the Mona Lisa. When 14 March arrived it brought with it a sense of impending gloom, as just days earlier coronavirus had been declared a worldwide pandemic.
