Some of my most cherished memories are of the local people I have connected with along the way who have graciously welcomed me into their hometowns.
I think a lot about Ronnie Chatah, who used to lead a walking tour on the history of Beirut. I joined his tour after reading about it in The New York Times. His passionate and thoughtful overview of the city’s complicated history has stayed with me to this day.
It’s these one-on-one connections, made away from the political rhetoric of our respective countries, that have the power to create real change in our world. It’s hard to hate people when you see their humanity and know their stories.
