Just the name “Ireland” conjures up a vista of rich imagery. The breathtaking scenery, the famously welcoming people, the unmissable landmarks: these are all celebrated, and for good reason.
But if you think you’re well-versed in all that the island has to offer, get ready to broaden your horizons when it comes to the Irish experience. Small as it is, Ireland has myriad lesser-known places for the curious traveler to explore.
Actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson did a superb job highlighting some of the country’s uncharted delights on a US chat show recently, when they shared their favorite Irish destinations. For Colin, it’s the West Cork town of Castletownbere; Brendan loves the county of Roscommon. Lovely as these places are, neither form part of the typical tourist trail. But they could – and should – form part of yours.
To celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17, we hope you enjoy this showcase of some of Ireland’s wonderful hidden gems.
