We Slept For Peace!

For the first time ever, HI-USA held Sleep For Peace, a national effort held in conjunction with the United Nation's International Day of Peace on September 21. On this day, our hostels across the country held peace-inspired activities, and HI-USA allocated $1 for every guest's stay towards a scholarship fund to help underprivileged youth experience hostelling. In all, more than $4,000 was raised!

Nearly every hostel showed and discussed The Day After Peace, a short film about how this day came to be, and many hostels put their unique spin on other celebratory activities. At HI-Washington DC, a day-long peace conference was held, and at HI-Marin Headlands guests contributed their thoughts to a "peace tree." Guests at HI-New York City were involved in active dialogue at a temporary structure built just for this day, and HI-Santa Monica reached out to HI hostels around the world to create a video montage of peace being expressed in different languages.

Discovering the USA's Hostelling Potential

After visiting HI-San Diego Downtown and HI-San Diego, Point Loma, two prominent bloggers have the U.S. hostelling scene on their brain. There's so much to see and do right in your backyard, and they're shining the spotlight on all the great things HI-USA hostels have to offer.

Check out what Michael from Art of Adventuring has to say about his experience in San Diego, and why he chose "incredible" as a way to describe the Point Loma location. Michael is now on a mission to educate his readers on the true U.S. hostelling experience and how it needs to grow.

Stephanie from Twenty-Something Travel offers her honest impressions about what's it's like to be a hosteller in San Diego. Read about her visit filled with walking tours, pub crawls, and communal dinners, and why she thinks more Americans should hostel on their home turf.

As a nonprofit organization built on the principle that hostelling leads to improved cultural understanding, which ultimately creates a more peaceful world, we couldn't think of a better day to stand behind. Thank you to everyone who joined in and we will continue to spread peace through hostelling all year round!
