Why are tourists returning items to Pompeii?

Tourists from all over the world have been sending items back to Pompeii which they believe have brought them misfortune. In a recent conversation with Lonely Planet, Pompeii's Archaeological Officer has stated that more than 200 packages containing returned items have been sent - some with specific details of their bad luck.

The longest US domestic flight is coming back to take travelers to Hawaii
Although the 5095-mile flight previously operated five times per week, and is the longest domestic flight in the US, it will return with a twice-weekly nonstop service between Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and these major mainland airports.
