Join HI-USA for a Google+ Hangout with Atlas Obscura Creator Dylan Thuras

In an age where everything seems to have been explored and there is nothing new to be found, we celebrate a different way to travel and view the world. Join us on Monday, June 3, as founder Dylan Thuras introduces us to Atlas Obscura, the definitive guide to the world's wondrous and curious places. If your summer trip planning has you searching for books bound in human skin, gigantic flaming holes in the ground, or a taxidermy squirrel museum in the basement of a funeral home, we invite you to join a Google+ Hangout with us.

The Atlas Obscura is a collaborative project that relies on the far-flung community of explorers (like you!) to help discover places that will surprise the hell out of you and inspire new adventures for people who still believe in traveling with a sense of discovery. We'll discuss some of his favorite locations and curious facts, Obscura Society events, and how you can share your favorite amazing, hidden spots with the world.

RSVP here to join the hangout with us on June 3 at 7:00 pm EST.

HI-Chicago Open House June 6

HI-Chicago is hosting its annual Open House on Thursday, June 6, from 5:30-8:00 pm, and you're invited to attend. Take guided tours of the hostel, while kicking off the Chicago Blues Festival with our very own blues concert in the hostel! Members of the community, travelers, and HI-Chicago volunteers and staff will all be there.

We're welcoming back one of our favorite blues bands, "Two for the Blues," an exceptional, hard-to-classify band. Blending traditional Chicago blues and original music with soul, rock, and jazz influences, this band has a special way of enticing a wide audience.

When guests need to take a break from jamming out, we'll be serving appetizers and beverages while we mingle! A Chicago caricature artist will also be there to draw your picture and make you laugh.

Contact HI-Chicago Community Liaison Sharday El-Assar at activities.chicago@hiusa.org or (312) 583-2227 for more information.

HI-Washington, DC Unveils Renovated Guest Kitchen

HI-Washington DC is excited to announce the completion of our newly renovated kitchen space! The new kitchen features four stove tops, microwaves and toasters, two ovens, and a new freezer, as well as increased storage space for dry goods. In addition to an island for food prep, the new kitchen also includes two sinks specifically dedicated to washing and cleaning produce, and a separate area for washing dishes. Perhaps the feature we are most excited about is the new industrial dishwasher, which will definitely help out during the morning rush. "I can't think of anything more it needs!" said one hosteller about the new space.

With spring in bloom, HI-Washington, DC is placing fresh herbs in the windowsills for hostellers to use in their meals, including basil, sage, and oregano. Come stop by and cook with us!
